Astrology shapes, impacts and informs the way we design and furnish our homes, and as an astrologer who loves to look at colour, form and trends it’s fascinating to anticipate what a home suited to the ‘new normal’ will look like in 2021…

So, looking ahead what are the major planetary transits that will affect and guide our choices?

Here are my 2021 astrology predictions as follows…

Jupiter + Saturn in Aquarius: Smart Technology & Innovation…

Saturn In Aquarius – March 22nd 2020 to July 1st 2020, then December 17th 2020 to March 7th 2023, and Jupiter In Aquarius – December 19th 2020 to December 28th 2021…

Air sign Aquarius features prominantly in the twelve months ahead and beyond, with two major players in astrology setting up in this sector of the skies. This will bring considerable focus towards human connection, technology and innovation, and I believe will help us all be more cognizant of community (both online and in real life), with consideration for our fellow man. Here are some suggestions of how solutions may reveal themselves…

• Smart Spaces; no-touch technology, voice recognition, sensor controls (on our taps and lights), remotely operated household items (and avoidance of switches and remotes on appliances ‘germ hotspots’), air and water purification tools, antimicrobial work surfaces. IKEA has launched protective curtains that purify your home like a filtration system. Remeber, Aquarius is the humanitarian, space cadet of the Zodiac, and we might have Jetsons style interiors as standard!!

• Home Office & Gym; hybrid designs, detachable units, flexible furniture, convertible pieces, Murphy beds. A need for homeowners to hide away large pieces or use rooms during the day to double as offices. With many of us working from home for the foreseeable future it makes sense to decorate accordingly. Aquarius rules the airwaves and internet, so is at ease with Zoom meetings, and a pad that fashions itself around a digital presence. Though why stop at an avatar when you can create a stylish home as a backdrop?
  + exercise equipment that fits seamlessly into interiors, or pieces that double up as workout kit – hanging rings, a bench or art as fitness gear! The key is to adapt with consumers opting for a more modular interior… It’s important to be able to carry out multiple tasks: working, eating, playing or resting.
• Community Concerns & Collective Causes; I believe we will become more aligned with social distancing practices, with solutions to entertain and be entertained, or live with consideration of our fellow man – lets hope so! We may even see an increase in co-working and co-living as communal solutions prove suitable for our needs…

• Increased Hygiene Solutions; the clean colour white could be used to evoke cleanliness, with more antibacterial materials for communal places – bathrooms and common rooms.
• Minimalism & Monochrome Palettes; grays, off-whites, dark blue, and contemporary touches to fit in with our modern, digital appliances. Just take inspiration from your favorite futuristic movies: Blade Runner, Matrix, and Tron, or look at futurist (the late) Syd Mead’s aesthetic.

In contrast to Aquarius, there is also a continuation of disruption in the material realms of our planet thanks to Uranus in earth sign Taurus. As these two signs [Aquarius and Taurus] are both fixed there’s tension and a push for much of the year – namely between boundaried Saturn, and Uranus…

• Grow your own; people are now keen to cultivate vegetable patches, forrage, or create gardens that feed with a trend towards horticultural practices and plant based eating. Homeowners are increasingly looking for a place in the country and more space…

• Sustainability; climate change and the impact we have on our planet continue to be a big theme as the radical planet of progress ’Uranus’ creates change in the material realms of fashion, textiles, fashion and food (agriculture). There will be continual shifts towards reliable, durable, quality products, with a need for items built to last –  people are home more, so recognize where items used over and over require true resilience and stability. Remember, “buy cheap, buy twice!” Go for classic vintage pieces, high-end, second-hand furniture, or repurpose existing materials. Revive old textiles that last, and incorporate production waste into materials. Buy local, and ethical, too. Conscientious consumers are distancing themselves from mass produced products made just to be thrown away.
• The stressful climate in which we live reinforces the need for rest and respite, an environment that feels good. Tactile Taurus understands this, and ideas such a better sound insulation and an emphasis on sleep and décor are born from this Zodiac sign of good taste. Nature inspired colour palettes evoke calm;
• Re-Wild With Mother Nature As A Resource; obviously no pillaging your local green common or council flower display! But do rediscover local areas, getting out for a walk in the great outdoors to search for wild, native materials. Be respectful but also clock the bounties that are afforded, use them in creative, artistic ways…
