Dell’Orefice was an only child to her Italian immigrant father and Hungarian mother; they didn’t divorce, nor stay together.

It seems an austere upbringing: “I was a sad child” she says, “I was full of solitude and solemnity.” “Penniless and hungry for most of my youth”, “we were so poor that my mother would often leave me in a foster home until she could raise enough money to rent rooms for us.”

At the same time, her mother was highly ambitious, and Carmen initially modelled to help support her impoverished parents.
