Discover Yogastrology – When Yoga Meets Astrology…

Two of my favourite things, combined to create a perfect practice! But what is Yogastrology®?

I’ve been a big fan of yoga since my teenage years, when my mums friend (Lorraine) taught me the basics of stretching and posing.

My auntie Lorraine was a big influence on my astrological interests too, as she had a bookcase full of interesting reads that I’d pore over as she and my mother whiled away the hours.

Lorraine is also a palmist, but won’t often indulge in reading your palm, unless you catch her off-guard when she can go into a trance like state. Anyways, she sparked my interest in yoga, revealing that practicing very simple moves was the key to a supple body into old age. This was around 1995 but it was only in my early 20s at the gym I started attending the odd yoga class, and to this day I’ve never done teacher training or any professional courses.

Still, as an astrologer I’ve always been keen to explore the link between a perfect practice and the traditional areas of the body in astrology, and how we can strengthen them through yoga.

It is thought that by aligning the practice of yoga with astrology, we can become more attuned to the universe, achieving a deeper state of wellness and fulfilment. Fabulous!

Creator Diane Booth Gilliam spent ten years in an ashram and has over 33 years experience practicing and teaching hatha yoga.

“I began to realize that every asana (yoga pose) ultimately relates to the spine—the spine really is the key to the practice of yoga. Within the spine is the Sushumna, that subtle-body energy channel (called a nadi) that embodies the pathway of kundalini Shakti —the energizing power of the universe. On either side of the Sushumna, two additional nadis named Ida and Pingala reside.

Ancient yogis knew that Ida and Pingala align our bodies with the Sun and Moon and attune us — if we’re willing — with all of creation. That explains the term hatha. Ha-tha yoga in actuality means Sun and Moon in Sanskrit. Ha = Sun. Tha = Moon.”

Sun, Moon And Yoga

Hatha (Sun-Moon) yoga in itself is an exercise that encourages synchronization with the celestial cycles – it’s a natural springboard for bringing body into alignment with the Sun, the Moon and the stars! It’s thought that these natural cycles promote happier bodies and greater spiritual awakening…

Depending on your zodiac sign you could have a vulnerability in that area, doing yoga for that area can transform the weakness into strength. Perform the yoga pose for your moon sign to attune to the rhythms of the universe, and for your rising sign to promote self esteem.

So, what are the recommended poses for each sign? Just look below, and to the stars above!
